A TOTAL of €3 million has been saved in energy and waste costs by winning contestants in the Green Hospitality Awards, according to competition sponsor the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA),

The agency yesterday said individual hotels had saved up to €100,000 using water conservation measures alone.

Hotels which work with the EPA National Waste Prevention Programme over a four-year period also saved – in 2008 alone – up to €100,000 in energy costs and up to €45,000 through recycling and waste prevention.

Some 180 hotels have so far taken part in the awards scheme, with 54 receiving annual awards for excellence this year.
