LIFESTYLE Q&A: Stephen Faloon, manager of the Grand Canal Theatre in Dublin
Do you think you have a healthy lifestyle?
There are two answers to that. It was a “yes” before I became manager of the Grand Canal Theatre – but I’m afraid since taking the job and all its stresses, my lifestyle is not as healthy any more.
I love the concept of healthy lifestyle, but unfortunately when working in theatre, the opportunity to adhere to it becomes very difficult. I sleep too little, eat too much and eat late. I’m always promising to change that and promise to do it after this interview.
How often do you exercise?
I do try and walk to work every day (35 minutes). I love swimming and I love to play tennis, though I’m not great at it. There was a school next door to us growing up, so we had the tennis courts to ourselves all summer. I’ve done the Cork marathon as part of a relay team for the past few years.
Do you get your five a day?
I try to, but I’m not always successful. I love vegetables and am on an apple and orange binge at the moment. But I also have a devil of a sweet tooth and enjoy the odd drink or two.
Do you worry?
One always has the odd heart attack when you think no one is going to turn up to your wonderful show, so worry is always an issue.
I always worry that I’m not healthy enough too. I’m on a constant mission to be more health-conscious about the food I eat and do more exercise, but I never quite succeed.
What do you do to relax?
I love to go to the cinema and for walks, and I do find the perfect way to relax and get rid of stress is to go for a swim. When I’m in the pool, my head just clears – it’s the best de-stresser there is.
What’s your unhealthiest habit?
Too numerous to mention but I will try: chocolate, pick’n’mix when at the cinema, and alcohol. But probably my biggest vice is wine gums – I’m a bit of a connoisseur of all the different brands. I save all the black ones for last, they’re my favourites!
