The HSE says your child has to be under 6 years of age on that date to be eligible for this scheme, although confusingly it also says any child with a sixth birthday in July will be given a card for that month.

If your child already has a medical card s/he will be automatically registered for the new scheme, so you don’t need to apply. If your child doesn’t have a card you do need to register.

What do I need to register?

You need your child's PPS number, your own PPS number as parent or guardian and you need to select a GP of your choice. Parents of newborns who don't yet have a PPS number are being advised to contact the Department of Social Protection or they can leave that box on the form blank for now.

If your children attend different GPs, you’ll have to apply separately for each one.

If your doctor's name does not appear on the list of registered GPs, check that list here, it means s/he hasn't signed up to provide the scheme; coverage is low in some parts of the country coverage. It is just 8 per cent in south Tipperary for example. Or it could be the doctor is not accepting any further registrations.

If this is the case, you’ll have to pick another GP, though if your original doctor joins up at a later date you can always move back to that practice if desired.

What happens once I register?

The details are sent to your GP of choice, who must accept your child on his/her panel. Once that is confirmed, you’ll be sent a GP visit card in the post.

What services can my child avail of once the card is issued?

You’re entitled to free GP visits, health assessment at age 2 and 5, and care if your child has asthma.

What are the assessments at 2 and 5 years?

These preventive checks are focused on health, well-being and prevention of disease. Your child’s age, gender, weight and height will be recorded and plotting on a centile chart. Appropriate follow-up advice will be given, including what the HSE calls “brief intervention and support” or referral to specialist services.

What is the asthma check?

The severity of your child’s asthma will be checked and medications reviewed. The GP will advise on improving the asthma as well as providing a written plan for managing the condition. These checks will take place on a yearly basis to age 6.

Will I have to pay for medicines prescribed by doctors for my under-6 child?

Yes, unfortunately, and you’ll have to pay for follow-up treatment and procedures in the private system. The existing drug payment scheme will cover the cost of medicines and appliances over € 144 per month for patients with heavy treatment requirements.

Is that it?

The card covers home visits and out of hours visits. Many GPs are forecasting a big increase in demand for their service and have warned this could lead to delays. Only time will tell.
