The Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Ms Harney, today cleared the way for Ulster Television's takeover of Cork radio group, County Media Limited.

The bid had early in the week been rejected by the Independent Radio and Television Commission (IRTC).

UTV is seeking to purchase the entire shareholding of County Media for £31.5 million (euro 40 million). The IRTC said on Monday the bid had been rejected because to allow the takeover would have involved a fundamental change in its policy.

County Media Limited owns three local radio stations in Cork - 96FM in Cork City, 103 FM in North Cork and 103 FM in West Cork.

A statement from the Minister's office said: "The Tanaiste notes that the IRTC has blocked the acquisition but also that the commission has indicated that it might be open to reconsider the bid in April. She trusts that any issues of cross media ownership will be dealt with by the IRTC."
