The Garda Ombudsman Commission has begun investigating the death of a man in Drogheda during the early hours of this morning.

The man died from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound while gardaí had him under surveillance in an effort to arrest him in Drogheda.

The Irish Times understands the man was being observed in an operation which involved local gardaí and the armed Regional Support Unit on the north quays from about 5am.

He had earlier been involved in a chase with Garda cars during which he fired warning shots.

He then drove his vehicle onto the north quays and as gardaí had his position surrounded he shot himself.

The commission is examining the scene of the incident, which has been sealed off for forensic analysis.
