Grenade found in garden is destroyed by bomb squad

The Army bomb disposal unit has destroyed an early 20th century grenade found in a garden in south Dublin yesterday.

The Defence Forces deployed a team to Chelmsford Avenue in Ranelagh following a request from the gardaí.

The badly corroded grenade, which is thought to date from the War of Independence, was discovered by a local resident who was carrying out excavation work in his garden.

The bomb disposal team arrived in Ranelagh at 5.30pm yesterday and examined the grenade at the scene.

The grenade was then made safe for transportation and brought to nearby Ringsend Beach where it was subsequently destroyed by means of a controlled explosion.

The scene was declared safe at 6.50pm yesterday.
