Gardaí have this evening named the two teenagers killed in a road accident this morning.

Both aged 17 years and from Co Carlow, they are Joseph Dunne from Slaney View, Tullow, and Colin Coleman from Hacketstown.

They died after the van in which they were travelling crashed into a wall at Tyrrellspass, Co Westmeath.

The deaths bring to fourteen the number that have died on the State's roads since the weekend.

Meanwhile, a mother and her eight-year-old son are still in a critical condition in Monaghan General Hospital after the car in which they were travelling collided with a milk tanker on the Monaghan/Cootehill Road near Swanscross yesterday.

Ms Catherine Curtis, who is in her 30s, underwent emergency surgery last night and her son, Wayne, is on a life support machine.

Three young relatives aged between four and 14 were killed in the incident, while the woman's husband and their three-month-old baby were not seriously injured.

The driver of the tanker was physically unhurt but treated for shock.
