The RUC in Derry yesterday described as horrific the injuries suffered by a 29-year-old man who was abducted from his home by an armed gang on Thursday night, writes George Jackson. The victim, who does not wish to be named, is a member of one of Derry's best-known republican families. He was alone in his flat at Glen Court when eight masked men, one of them armed with a handgun, burst in.

"They placed a hood over his head and bundled him into a car. He was found just over an hour later, lying on the road into Inch Island near Burnfoot in Co Donegal," said an RUC spokesman. "His injuries, which included multiple fractures and puncture wounds, were horrific, and it's clear that he went through a terrible ordeal at the hands of his abductors."

Insp Greg Sullivan said gardai investigating the incident believed that the man was probably assaulted by his abductors close to where he was found by a passing motorist. "He was very badly beaten. He sustained a broken leg, broken ankle, broken arm and several broken ribs and he has multiple puncture wounds and bruises. Initially it seems he was beaten where he was found," he said.
