Sixteen people have died in road crashes up to last night, compared to just 10 in January 2012. Four people lost their lives over the weekend.

The Garda Ombudsman Commission is inquiring into the circumstances of a fatal crash in Naas, Co Kildare, at about 3.20am yesterday. A man aged in his mid-20s was involved in a two-car crash on the Naas-Newbridge dual carriageway.

The Garda Ombudsman is required to investigate all such incidents where a member of the Garda is involved. The investigation is believed to concern a Garda car in the area at the time.

Also in Co Kildare, a man in this 40s died after a two-car crash at Broadford near Kinnegad. Gardaí at Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, are investigating a two-car collision on the N2 at Tullyvaragh Lower, Carrickmacross, at 5pm on Friday.

One of the drivers, named locally as Michelle McCabe (34) from Shantonagh, near Latton, Co Monaghan, was killed. In Co Mayo, gardaí said Tara Ryan (21) from Johnstown, Swinford, was killed in a crash involving a car, truck, and a minibus on Friday.
