Fisherman dies of injuries at sea

A fisherman has died after he sustained serious head injuries following an incident at sea.

The Coast Guard search and rescue helicopter responded, while the Courtmacsherry lifeboat also attended.

A fisherman has died after he sustained serious head injuries following an incident at sea.

The man, who was from Castlegregory near Dingle and is believed to have been in his late 20s or early 30s, is understood to have died from his injuries while on board.

He was one of three crew members of the 40ft vessel Liberty, based in Castletownbere, Cork.

They had been fishing 23 miles south of the Old Head of Kinsale when the alarm was raised at around 6.30pm last night.

The Coast Guard search and rescue helicopter responded, and the Courtmacsherry lifeboat also attended.

The deceased was transferred by helicopter to Cork Airport and then to Cork University Hospital (CUH).

The Liberty redirected to Kinsale harbour where it was due to arrive at around 1am this morning.
