The Irish Coast Guard helicopter this morning airlifted a Spanish fisherman from a vessel off the Clare coast for medical treatment.

The Valentia Coastguard said it had airlifted the man from a fishing boat 90 miles west of Loop Head.

The man was brought to Tralee General Hospital.

In another marine rescue, which took place late last night, two Filipino workers on the QE2 luxury liner were airlifted to Cork’s University Hospital.

The men were picked up from the ship by a British military Sea King helicopter after suffering severe burns when they were showered with steam from a faulty boiler valve in the ship's engine room.

The QE2 was 280 miles south west of the Irish coast at the time. The ship was heading towards Ireland at a speed of 30 knots.

The men, who are both in their 20s, are said to be in a stable but serious condition in hospital.
