A status yellow wind warning has been issued for Co Donegal for Sunday morning and afternoon.

The warning will be valid from 11am-4pm on Sunday. Met Éireann said that west to northwest winds will reach mean speeds of 50-60km/h, with gusts of 90 to 100km/h possible.

“Winds will be stronger near coastal areas, where localised wave overtopping is possible, and on high ground,” they said.

Wet and windy weather has been forecast for this weekend, and Saturday will see outbreaks of rain and drizzle spread across the country.

Overall, it will be blustery and dull for much of Saturday and Sunday, but temperatures will remain mild for February.

“The south east will generally stay the driest for much of today,” said Andrew Doran-Sherlock, forecaster with Met Éireann.

There will be fresh and gusty westerly winds all day today, with gales on the coasts as well.

However, the temperature will be mild for this time of year, according to Mr Doran-Sherlock. “Highest temperatures will reach 7-11 degrees, especially in the south.”

The rain will clear southwards eventually but a cold front will push through on Sunday evening, with scattered showers arriving from the north. This will result in a cooler start to Sunday, with the potential for frost, hail or sleet showers.

There is also a risk of thunderstorms, but these will mainly be confined to the sea, but the northern part of the country may be at risk also.

As Sunday moves on, it will become a bit warmer, and as the week continues, it will be milder, cloudier and drizzlier. “Temperatures may reach 13-14 degrees, a good bit higher than the average.”

Currently, there is a small craft warning in place for all day Saturday, as westerly winds will reach force six or higher on all Irish coasts.

There is also a status yellow gale warning for all coasts of Ireland and on the Irish Sea. Westerly winds will reach gale force eight at times, and the warning is in place until midday Sunday.
