Last month we watched a wasp and a honeybee clutching each other and buzzing furiously. A short while later the wasp had disappeared and the bee was wandering around, as if injured or dying.

This is unusual. In autumn, wasps are meant to be in search of sugary food before they die, not preying on other insects, which they usually do to feed their larvae.
The creature in my photograph was crawling over my bike a few months ago.

It was the larva of the harlequin ladybird, an invasive threat to native ladybirds.
I found the jaw bones in this photograph on a beach at Mweenish, in Connemara. The teeth are quite fearsome.
