A 19-year-old man is expected to appear in court in Dublin today in connection with a stabbing incident early yesterday morning in which another teenager was killed.
Prayers were said at Masses yesterday at St Patrick's Church in Ringsend for 19-year-old Alan Young, from George Reynolds House, Ringsend, who died after being stabbed during what local people said was a row over a moped. The moped was later found burnt-out and Garda forensic experts removed it for technical examination.
The incident occurred near Irishtown sports stadium on Bremen Road, beside what local people call "the rock" or "the drain", a wall where young people congregate.
A local resident said about 20 people were in the area at the time the row broke out at 1.20am. The two teenagers involved in the fight were friends and, according to local people, the knife used in the fight belonged to a third person.
The victim was taken to St Vincent's hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Neighbours described the victim as a "lovely lad, very quiet and he was never in any kind of trouble before".
He was the youngest in a family of 12 "and the rest of the family doted on him" one said.
He had just started a new full-time job in recent weeks, having been on a sports-related Fás course before that. It is understood he had played a soccer match on Saturday.
Local parish priest Fr Michael Coady, who visited the family last night, said prayers were said at evening Mass in the church the victim's mother attended regularly.
A postmortem was last night carried out by the State Pathologist's office.
Earlier, Garda forensic experts carried out a technical examination at the scene of the stabbing. They also sealed off another area, where the knife used in the row is believed to have been thrown.
The 19-year-old man who was arrested shortly after the stabbing was detained for questioning all day yesterday at Donnybrook Garda station.
He is expected to appear in Dublin District Court today.
