Irish costume designer Joan Bergin has won an Emmy for her costume work on the television series The Tudors. The awards ceremony took place in Los Angeles on Saturday night.
Speaking to The Irish Timeson her return, she said: "There had been talk that I was in with a chance but in this industry that happens quite a lot so you just never know. It was a very long ceremony, and I was barely awake by the time Stanley Tucci came out, made a very funny speech about costume, and then called out my name."
Bergin has worked on dozens of Irish and international films, including My Left Foot, In the Name of the Fatherand Veronica Guerin.
The Emmy - the equivalent of an Oscar for television - is her first major international award. The Tudorstook a second Emmy for composer Trevor Morris.
The Tudorswas filmed in Ireland and stars Irish actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers as a young Henry VIII. The kind of bawdy historical drama for which the adjective "bodice-ripping" might have been invented, it is based on the early life of the many-wifed monarch.
Following a successful run in the US, series one is now on TV3 (tonight at 10pm). Series two is being shot in locations around Ireland. It has been credited with giving a much-needed boost to the local film and television industries. Also among the cast are Irish actors Maria Doyle Kennedy as Catherine of Aragon and Peter O'Toole as Pope Paul III.
Yesterday, Bergin was back to work at Ardmore Studios in Bray.
"They really loaded on the sex in series one, but series two is darker and more serious and they keep their clothes on more. So there's a lot more work for the costume department."
