The controversial Monument of Light, commonly known as "The Spike", planned for the site once occupied by Nelson Pillar has finally been sanctioned by the Minister for the Environment. Mr Dempsey's decision clears the way for construction of the monument and plaza to begin in the new year.
Two years after the design by London-based architect-engineer Mr Ian Ritchie was selected from 205 entries, Mr Dempsey has decided to approve the 120-metre stainless steel spire despite continuing public objections.
The decision fell to him as a result of a High Court ruling that Dublin Corporation should have prepared an environmental impact statement on the u £3 million-plus project.
Contrary to some expectations, the Minister has made no concession on height. This is in line with the recommendations of Mr Eoghan Brangan, one of his senior planning advisers, who said he could see no valid reason for trimming it.
