A fire on the undercarriage of a train has disrupted rail services between Galway and Dublin this evening.
Some 260 passengers were on board the 3.05 service when the driver received an automated alert of the fire just outside Athenry.
The fire was underneath one of the six carriage and did not effect the passenger area.
As a precaution the driver moved the passengers to the back of the train and alerted the fire services.
After emergency services had extinguished the fire, passengers alighted from the train, some using ladders, Iarnród Éireann spokesman Barry Kenny said. Passengers boarded buses to Athenry from a nearby road .
The train remains immobile on the track this evening. As a result passengers travelling to Dublin were being transferred by bus to Athenry.
Normal service is expected to resume tomorrow morning, Mr Kenny said.
Iarnród Éireann reported the incident to the Rail Accident Investigation Unit.
