A drop in the number of redundancies notified to the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment is set to be recorded this year for the first time since 2000.

The decrease provides further evidence that more jobs are being sustained or created as a result of the recovery in the economy.

The latest figures are provided in a reply by the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Mr Martin, to a written Dáil question by the Labour TD, Mr Joe Sherlock.

The number of redundancies notified to his Department to the end of October was 20,127, a decrease of just over 10 per cent for the same period last year, Mr Martin said.

If the decline is maintained over the last two months of the year, it would be the first such decrease since a dramatic rise in redundancies began four years ago.

In 2000, there were 13,316 redundancies notified to the Department, a small decrease from the previous year. The figure jumped to 19,977 in 2001, 25,358 in 2002 and 27,702 last year.
