A Meath woman is to circumnavigate Ireland's lighthouses by land and sea to raise funds for Beaumont Hospital.
Ms Eimear (Bridie) Browne, who works for Irish Ferries, will raise funds during her solo "anti-clockwise" cycle round the coast. She set off from Rosslare, Co Wexford, on Wednesday and reached Dún Laoghaire, Co Dublin, last night. She will be cycling to the 38 lighthouses on the mainland and circling the 42 offshore lights by boat with the help of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and local boat-owners.
Ms Browne intends to circle Kish lighthouse off Dublin Bay by boat today, weather permitting, before heading for Baily lighthouse in Howth, and Rockabill, again by boat, off Skerries tomorrow.
Ms Browne's 22-year-old cousin, Mr Lee Cromwell, spent the last fortnight of his life in Beaumont Hospital last September after a car crash. She hopes the funds will be used to improve facilities for families of patients at Richmond intensive care unit in the hospital.
She has taken leave from work and expects to be on the road until early July,averaging 40 to 50 miles a day, when she hopes to reach the Tuskar Rock light off the south-east coast.
