A 17-year-old man will appear before court today charged in connection with a serious assault that left a man in hospital in Co Offaly.

The man, in his 50s, suffered severe head injuries after being attacked near Supervalu on Main Street in Birr at about 3pm on Monday.

The victim was airlifted to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin where his condition was described as serious.

The teenager was expected to appear in Tullamore District Court in relation to the incident.

He was detained at Birr Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4, Criminal Justice Act – 1984.
