Man held over murder of Belfast boxer

Man (32) held on suspicion of murder after Eamonn Magee Jr fatally stabbed in Twinbrook

A 32-year-old man is still in custody following his arrest in connection with the death of a 22-year-old man in Belfast during the early hours of Saturday morning.

Eamonn Magee Jr, a rising boxing star and son of former world champion boxer Eamonn Magee, was stabbed to death in the Summerhill Park area of Twinbrook, in the west of the city.

The PSNI received a report of a stabbing incident just before 2.40am. Emergency services attended the scene and the injured man was taken to hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries.

Detective Chief Inspector John McVea said: “We are currently investigating the circumstances which led to the death of such a young man as Eamonn, who is a son, a brother, a partner and a friend.”

A man was arrested in the Dunmurry area on suspicion of murder and is currently assisting police with their enquiries.

Police have issued an appeal to the public for anyone who heard or witnessed a dispute in the Summerhill Park area to contact them at Lisburn Police Station.

Sinn Féin MLA Jennifer McCann said the Twinbrook community was in shock and appealed to anyone with information to contact the police.

“This is an absolute tragedy for his family and the local community are in shock,” she said.

“I extend my condolences to the family of the victim and I appeal to local people to assist the police in any way they can in their investigation.”
