Man charged with murder of Irish jeweller in Melbourne

A man has appeared before a Melbourne court charged with the stabbing to death of an Irish jeweller.

Dermot O'Toole (64), who was originally from Co Galway, was fatally wounded after he came to the aid of his wife Bridget during an armed hold-up of their shop The Jewel Shed in the suburb of Hastings last Firday.

Mr O’Toole died at the scene and his 63- year-old wife was taken to Frankston hospital. She was released on Saturday night.

The raider reportedly escaped with jewellery valued at AU$200 (€140).

Gavin Perry (26) of Crib Point, was yesterday charged with murder, armed robbery and intentionally causing serious injury. He is due to appear in court again later today.
