Irish man (23) arrested in Thailand on drugs charges

Department of Foreign Affairs confirms it is helping citizen over alleged drug offences

A 23-year-old Irish man was arrested in Thailand over alleged drug offences on Monday.

The Thai news website Chiangrai Times reported that an Irish man was arrested on Monday night in Chiang Mai after allegedly attempting to sell marijuana to officers from the Crime Supression Division.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed it is providing consular assistance to an Irish citizen arrested in Thailand.

The website said that the man was arrested outside the Chiang Mai Night Plaza Boutique Hotel as he attempted to sell a kilo of marijuana to officers for 200,000 baht (about €5,100).

It reported that, following his arrest, he was charged with various drug offences and remanded pending further investigation.

If convicted, the man could face up to 50 years in prison in Thailand.
