Investigations have been launched after a prisoner in Maghaberry Prison in Northern Ireland died over the weekend.

The 53-year-old died on Saturday in the maximum security prison, the Northern Ireland Prison Service said. His death was not related to Covid-19.

His next of kin have been notified. The Prison Service said in line with standard procedure, investigations have been launched by the PSNI, the Coroner and the Prisoner Ombudsman.

“I would like to extend my sympathy, and that of the Northern Ireland Prison Service, to the family of the prisoner. My thoughts are with them at this difficult time,” said Director General of the Northern Ireland Prison Service Ronnie Armour.
