Investigation into clash between revellers and gardaí in Temple Bar

Glass bottles broken and thrown during public order incident at weekend

An investigation has begun into an incident involving revellers and Garda members in Dublin's Temple Bar at the weekend.

The Garda Síochána Ombudsman launched an investigation after the incident – which involved five men, and during which bottles were broken and thrown – was referred to it.

The Irish Times understands some of the men were off-duty gardaí from a Dublin Garda station.

The Garda is obliged to refer to Gsoc for investigation “any matter that appears to indicate that the conduct of a member of the Garda Síochána may have resulted in the death of, or serious harm to, a person”.

Bottles were smashed and thrown during the disturbance that occurred outside Gallagher’s Boxty House on Fleet Street, the main nightlife strip in the Temple Bar area at approximately 1.30am on Sunday.

Issuing a public appeal for information and for witnesses to come forward, Gsoc referred to it as a “public order incident”.

“Gsoc is requesting anyone who witnessed the incident, or anyone who may have information that may be of assistance to the investigation, to contact it on 1890 600 800.”
