University College Cork wants an injunction to stop an alleged extension of picketing to its entrance gates next week by employees of a research institute in a dispute over pay, the High Court has heard.

The university is seeking the order against Siptu and the Irish Federation of University Teachers (IFUT) over what the college says are proposals to extend the picketing related to a long-running pay dispute at the Tyndall National Institute.

Tyndall is an information technology research and development institute at UCC operating at a premises one kilometre from the main campus, the court heard.

Tom Mallon, for UCC, was given permission by Mr Justice Paul Gilligan to serve short notice on Siptu and the IFUT of its intention to seek an injunction preventing the extension of picketing to the main campus on May 13th.

The application was made ex parte and was returned to later this week to give the defendants an opportunity to respond. Mr Mallon said this was part of a long-running trade dispute over pay.
