A 41-year-old man has been charged with murdering another man in a crowded bar in Limerick last weekend.

Mark Crawford, with an address at Distillery View, Thomondgate, appeared before Limerick District Court charged with murdering Patrick 'Pa' O'Connor (24) at Fitzgerald's Bar, Sexton Street North, Thomondgate, on July 7th.

Mr O'Connor, from Kileely, died on Sunday morning in hospital. It is understood he had been stabbed.

Detective Garda Tommy Griffin, Mayorstone Garda station gave evidence of arresting and charging Mr Crawford. He said that after he was cautioned, the accused he “made no reply”.

Sergeant Donal Cronin of Henry Street Garda station applied for the accused to be remanded in custody to next Tuesday “for the purposes of obtaining DPP directions”.

Judge Marian O’Leary remanded Mr Crawford, who did not speak during the hearing, in custody to appear before Limerick District Court again next Tuesday.

During the proceedings, the court was interrupted by the victim’s mother, who shouted at the accused: “Why did you murder my son, you f**king bastard? You animal.”

She was led away from the court in a distressed state by relatives . Other family members wept throughout the brief hearing.
