Kerry man who ‘made holy show of himself’ fined for drunkenness

Padraig Casey was stopping traffic in Kilgarvan while heavily intoxicated, court hears

A man who made “a holy show of himself” while drunk in the middle of a Co Kerry village has been fined €100.

Kenmare District Court was told Padraig Casey (37) , of Frenanaugh, Clonkeen, Killarney had been stopping traffic in Kilgarvan at 6.20pm on January 21st. He was highly intoxicated.

“This was in the middle of Kilgarvan. He was trying to thumb a lift. He was holding up traffic,” Supt Flor Murphy informed Judge James O’Connor.

“Did he know the direction he was going in?” Judge O’Connor asked.

“The truth was he did not know where he was going on the night, even though it was early,” defence solicitor Padraig O’Connell said.

The court was told that gardaí felt Casey was a danger to himself and to the public. He was arrested in a part of the village known as the Church Ground.

“He made a holy show of himself,” Mr O’Connell said, adding that his client was pleading guilty and looking for leniency.

Mr Casey had injured himself herding a yearling cow, the solicitor explained, pointing to the right hand of his client which was in a cast.

Judge James O’Connor convicted Casey and fined him €100 or five days in jail in default.
