Taoiseach Brian Cowen has said he will seek a dissolution of the Dáil next Tuesday.
Mr Cowen made the announcement this morning during an interview with Radio na Gaeltachta's Athmhaidin programme. He said he would tell the Dáil of his intention at 2.30pm on Tuesday.
February 25th has emerged as the most likely date for the election.
Under the Constitution, the Taoiseach has to ask the President to dissolve the Dáil.
The Seanad will begin a two-day debate on the Finance Bill this morning following yesterday's Dáil approval of the measure.
Under the Constitution, once the President issues a proclamation dissolving the Dáil, a general election must be held within 30 days.
After the President issues the proclamation, a writ is issued to the returning officer in every constituency directing him or her to hold an election. The Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government will then set the polling day.
