Members of the public who do their bit to help promote road safety are to be honoured at an awards ceremony, details of which were revealed today.
The Leading Lights in Road Safety awards, which are now in their fourth year, recognise the contribution of local community groups, schools, businesses, the media and those working in the emergency services in making roads safer.
A call for nominations for the awards, which are organised by the Road Safety Authority (RSA), was made today. The winners will be announced at a ceremony to be held at Farmleigh House in October.
Overall there are nine award categories, including Road Safety Ambassador of the Year prize.
The judging panel for this year's ceremony includes RTÉ broadcaster Miriam Callaghan, the chief fire officer of Dublin Fire Brigade Hugh O'Neill and the editor of the Irish Daily Star, Gerard Colleran.
Speaking at today's nominations announcement, RSA chief executive Noel Brett said the individuals recognised by the awards are the "unsung heroes" of road safety.
"What we're really seeking to do here is recognise people who are making an extraordinary effort in promoting safety," he said. "In the last 10 years we've almost halved the numbers of people killed on our roads and the main reason for this is that ordinary people have made changes in their lives and taken responsibility for road safety in Ireland."
