Bus Eireann announces ticket price increase

Bus Éireann has announced a reduction in the "levels of discount" to some categories of bus tickets.

Bus Éireann has announced a reduction in the "levels of discount" to some categories of bus tickets.

The changes will affect day return tickets, midweek return tickets and ten-journey tickets. All other discounted fares will remain unchanged.

Speaking to ireland.com, a Bus Éireann spokesman said changes to discounted fares would result in an average increase in cost of 8 per cent.

The spokesman cited continuing increases in operating costs, in particular the costs incurred by the effects of traffic congestion and the company's adherence to the national wage agreements, as its reason for reducing discounts to travelers.

Bus Éireann currently spends €13 million each year on the effects of traffic congestion. This results in an increase in spending on fuel, bus-repair and the replacement of damaged vehicles.

Asked if any further increases were planned, the spokesman said none were at present but that ticket prices were always under review.

Information on revised fares is available from Bus Éireann travel centres, offices and depots.
