A number of Irish chief executives are today rolling up their sleeves to help raise money for cancer research in a project called Back to the Shop Floor.

The Irish Cancer Society’s annual Daffodil Day fundraiser has taken on an additional theme this year with CEOs such as Mr Liam O’Mahony of CRH, Mr Mike Soden of Bank of Ireland, Senator Feargal Quinn of Superquinn and others doing some day-to-day task relating to their business.

Those participating are raising funds by inviting colleagues, suppliers and staff to sponsor their endeavours.

Irish Cancer Society chief executive Mr Barry Dempsey said: "Back to the Shop Floor provides an opportunity for the business world to have some fun on Daffodil Day and at the same time, make a real contribution to supporting people with cancer and their families.

"The money raised by this project will go to fund the appointment of three cancer liaison nurses who will provide psychological support to people with cancer in major hospitals," he said.

The Irish Cancer Society hopes to raise over €2.25 million today to finance its specialist nursing services that are available free of charge for people with cancer and their families.

Over 5,000 volunteers will be lending their support to the campaign countrywide.

The campaign was launched earlier this month by President of the European Parliament Mr Pat Cox. Also at the launch were RTÉ’s Miriam O’Callaghan, Fair City’s David Duffy and Omero Mumba, younger brother of pop star Samantha Mumba.
