The Athletic Association of Ireland (AAI) have appointed three members of its executive committee to investigate an alleged incident between an adult male and a 16-year-old female athlete during a warm weather training camp which took place in the Mediterranean island of Malta last month.

The man was arrested along with the athlete by Maltese police on the night of April 19th near the town of St Julian's but the initial charge was subsequently dropped.

An AAI spokesperson yesterday confirmed to The Irish Times that the alleged incident was being investigated, but that they were also awaiting the report of the team manager present in Malta.

The athlete was part of a group of around 40 athletes and seven coaches who travelled abroad for the training trip organised by the AAI.

The trips are organised on a regular basis throughout the year for athletes in preparation for various international championships.

Full statements on the incident have also been requested from the man and the teenage athlete as part of the AAI investigation, which they will now deliver through their solicitors.
