More than 200 new jobs in Galway-based multinational companies are due to be announced today by the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Mr Martin.

The jobs are part of a "substantial" investment package which has been secured by the Industrial Development Authority (IDA) for Galway city and county. The package is understood to involve three multinational companies specialising in the healthcare and associated technology areas - all of which have IDA Ireland support.

The initiative is one of a series which the Minister will sanction in Galway city when he also opens the €19 million Regenerative Medicine Institute at NUI, Galway. The bio-medical re- search centre is one of two flagship projects secured by the university with support from Science Foundation Ireland, along with industry partners Medtronic and Charles River Laboratories. It has been endorsed as a centre for science, engineering and technology, and involves a partnership between scientists, clinicians at University College Hospital, Galway, and engineers in the university and industry.

It aims to develop better treatments for victims of heart attack, spinal cord injuries and chronic diseases through combined research into human stem cells and gene therapy.
