Train to the Clouds, Argentina

Officially it's the train from Salta to La Polvorilla but Train to the Clouds better reflects the fact that you're being hauled up to 4,200m above sea level. The 400km round trip takes 15 hours but feels much, much longer, perhaps because of the way time stands still while you cross all those matchstick-style bridges and viaducts. Palace on Wheels, India

Take a journey through time as much as through India, in carriages designed for maharajahs.
