Kieran Hickland, a reader from Kilrickle, in Loughrea, Co Galway, got in touch about some surprisingly expensive snacks at Shannon Airport

"At the HMS Host Bar at Shannon Airport, cheese-and-onion crisps must surely be the most expensive in the whole of Ireland. I queried the amount on my bill for two standard 37g packs - €1.55 per packet - and was told that, yes, that was the price. Can you believe it? This has got to be the rip-off of the year so far. Worse still, we actually paid it."

A spokesman for Shannon Airport responds:"A 37g packet of cheese-and-onion crisps should be priced at less than €1 per bag in the HMS Host Marsh Point Bar at Shannon Airport.

"In this instance the customer seems to have been charged inadvertently for a larger volume of a more expensive category of product, namely hand-cut crisps. We regret this incident and any inconvenience it may have caused the customer.

"If the customer concerned is happy to have The Irish Timesprovide his contact details, HMS Host will write to him, apologising for the incident, refunding him and providing him with a voucher for use on his next visit to the Marsh Point Bar."
