It’s Bealtaine in Waterford
The Bealtaine Festival of Outdoor Science begins tomorrow and runs until May 24th in the southeast. Bealtaine is the ancient Celtic celebration of the arrival of summer, and the science festival will focus on the living environment. Co-ordinated by Calmast at Waterford IT, the festival will feature a range of activities for the public. Tomorrow you can hear the dusk chorus at Waterford IT’s Carriganore campus in the company of author and broadcaster Eric Dempsey, who will lead a woodland bird walk. Whale-watching and plant-spotting events are also scheduled. www.livingearth.ie.
Brighton arts open up
Here's an idea Tourism Ireland might consider: opening up artists' houses to people who love nothing better than to vicariously experience another way of life. The Brighton Artists Open Houses festival is billed as the UK's biggest arts festival and takes place on May weekends. About 20 houses are open all month, with another 10 for the fifth weekend of May. Most houses are ordinary homes, although many have cafes attached. www.aoh.org.uk.
