Live like a local: Kanazawa, Japan

Emily McVey shares travel tips from her adopted home in Japan

Saturday morning
Enjoy the hustle and bustle of the Omicho Fish Market, and snack on freshly made Onigiri (rice balls with delicious fillings).

Saturday afternoon
Visit Kenroku-en garden, one of the most famous in Japan. Cross the bridge to gaze at Kanazawa Castle, taking in a terrific view of the city.

Saturday night
Head to Katamachi and stroll through the narrow alleyways of the Samurai district. Kimura Sushi has nine bar seats and the best sushi you've ever tried. Visit Choikichi for drinks – with space for about 10 people standing it is always filled with friendly locals. For something fancier, take in Jigger Bar St Louis for cocktails in a jazzy setting. Slurp the incredible noodles like a local at Ikki Ramen on the way home.

Sunday morning
Grab a delicious brunch in Café Dumbo – try the taco rice – then visit Higashi Chaya Tea district. The beautifully preserved area is lined with traditional Machiya style wooden houses. Glimpses of geisha are not uncommon as these tea houses are still in use. Witness Kanazawa's famous history of gold leaf production at Sakuda Gold Leaf Museum.
