The Irish Times is on the hunt for The Best Place to Go Wild in Ireland, asking members of the public to nominate their favourite spots to experience nature.

Dubliner Eoin O’Hagan has written to us about Lough Derg on the lower Shannon, which touches counties Tipperary, Clare and Galway. “You can drive, cycle, walk, cruise, paddle, fish or swim on Lough Derg, jewel of the Shannon. Time seems to stop as you wait for the Mayfly to come out of the trees to lay their eggs on the surface. While you’re waiting, you might even see one of the resident white tail eagles swoop down and take a fish from the water to feed its chicks.”

In the accompanying video, Eoin explains the lake’s appeal to Kathleen Harris.

You can nominate your own favourite place to #gowild – and learn more about the competition – at www.irishtimes.com/gowild.
