OK, LADS, it’s time to lay off Bono

OK, LADS, it’s time to lay off Bono. So what if U2 moved part of their business to the Netherlands to avoid tax? The money would only have disappeared into the black hole that is the Irish exchequer. And if being fiscally efficient is what keeps Bono happy, let him at it. All this baiting will only cause us more grief – and money – in the long run.

Because if only we were to appreciate the singer more fully, it would surely only be a matter of time before he would do his patriotic duty and launch the Irish leg of his Drop the Debt campaign. In which case we’re all home scot-free, maybe even for the stuff we put on our credit cards at Christmas.

So rather than bait the great man, let us celebrate him. And what better way to pay homage than to go on the Unforgettable Tour, an unofficial U2 trip around Dublin? The tour runs twice a day and costs €50 per person, for a minimum of two people.

Participants are driven around the city in a blacked-out Chrysler Voyager on an itinerary that includes the stable . . . I mean hospital where Bono was born, the school where he was educated and the studio where he recorded his songs.

There’s even a stop at a hearing-aid shop, scene of the Pauline conversion wherein our man cast off his original name in favour of, well, Bono.

So swallow your misplaced ire and let this prophet be recognised in his own country as someone who can move money in mysterious ways.
