Teddy bears’ picnic

World record attempt

Dublin Zoo already holds the Guinness World Records title for the biggest teddy bears’ picnic, but tomorrow it’s hoping to break its own record. It will take some doing and a great deal of teddy-toting co-operation from enthusiastic youngsters.

In 1995 the zoo managed to lure 33,753 teddies up to the Phoenix Park – which by anyone’s counting is a lot of bears – and the organisers are hoping that tomorrow children from all over Ireland can be persuaded to bring along their teds to the park.

The rules are simple: only proper teds need apply – so no bringing along any old stuffed toy – and each child can bring up to 20 teds.

Dublin Zoo is providing a free picnic, and every child who turns up at the entrance with at least one teddy under their arm will be admitted for half price.

€2 of each entry fee will be donated to the European Carnivore Campaign of the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums, an organisation working to ensure the survival of carnivores in the wild.

Even if your ted isn’t in the best of nick to be going to a party, bring it along anyway, because there will be a teddy-bear hospital in the zoo for emergency bear repair.
