National Bike Week:National Bike Week begins today and many children will be able to take part in bike-friendly events throughout the week in school.

This weekend and next there are family cycle events all over the country – a good opportunity to get out in groups on two wheels especially in rural areas where it can feel dangerous cycling on busy roads.

The week starts today with a family day at Eyre Square in Galway from 11.30am. There’ll be music, entertainment and a family-friendly mass cycle to Salthill. The week ends next Sunday with a “Pedal in the Park” family fun day in the Phoenix Park in Dublin starting at noon at the Papal Cross. There’ll be a bike village, parade of colours, competitions, prizes, live music, and guided tours.

There are events in most counties, some in the evening to take advantage of the longer mid-summer days. They include tomorrow’s 10km family cycle starting at the University of Limerick campus at 11am. In Killarney on the Ring of Kerry, starting next Friday evening at 6.45pm there’s a 10km family pedal beginning with registration at the Killarney National Park, Deenagh Lodge, opposite the cathedral.
