Finn Ryansays her tall husband has had to stand on recent charter flights
"Is there no safety requirement for airlines to provide adequate seating for tall people?
"Last November we went from Dublin to Cape Town - a 12-hour flight - with Slatterys, which uses LTU, a German charter. Tom, my husband, had an aisle seat, but it was so restricted he stood at the back of the aircraft most of the time.
"We could have booked seats with extra legroom, but these cost €175 per person per flight, or an additional €700 to sit together with the extra space.
"This time last year we flew from Dublin to Turkey, a four and a half hour journey. It was a Sunworld charter, with a Turkish airline called Onur Air. The seating was even worse. Tom had a choice of standing in a tilted position or, if he could contort himself, sitting with his knees around his shoulders.
"The staff on the outbound flight were helpful and moved him to an aisle seat where he could stretch his legs when the trolley wasn't passing.
"On the way back we checked in three hours early and requested extra legroom. This didn't work out, even though we had been first in the queue. The staff moved us twice, eventually to the front row.
"I spoke to Slatterys today about flying to Thailand. They said the extra charge applies only on Cape Town flights. We could request extra legroom to Bangkok at no extra charge but it would not be guaranteed. They suggested business class to guarantee extra room - you pay for what you get."
