Plans by Glenkerrin Homes to build a €150 million residential development on lands adjoining St Loman's Hospital in Palmerstown, Dublin 20, have been scuppered by South Dublin County Council.

The county council refused permission to build 577 residential units, because the number of apartments was too high and would contravene the County Development Plan 2004-2010.

The proposal was for 501 apartments and duplexes, and over 70 three and four-bedroom houses in eight blocks as well as a leisure centre, crèche, shops, anda medical centre.

Last year, Maynooth-based Glenkerrin, which is headed by Ray Grehan, paid the Eastern Health Board €31 million for the 22-acre site which is located beside the N4 and opposite the well-known Hermitage Golf Club.

Glenkerrin has been prolific of late with a development of 478 apartments, a nursing home, office and shops underway at the Grange at Galloping Green in Stillorgan and a sell-out launch of Ballintyre in Dundrum.

It also bid for the Jurys Doyle Hotel in Ballsbridge which was sold to Sean Dunne of Mountbrook Homes.

South Dublin County Council said the high proportion of apartments compared to semi-detached and detached homes "in an area not zoned a town or district centre would contravene the development plan which requires a wide range of house types and sizes to cater for the different needs of the population."
