2. This wallpaper can be custom ordered to fit a room. Pictured is a de Gournay hand-painted print that is inspired by a traditional Chinese painting entitled, 1000 Li of Rivers and Mountains. Done in full custom colours that tone with the room’s furnishings, it is printed on to sterling silver gilded tea paper and its mother of pearl antique finish almost makes it look like a family heirloom. The fact that it’s set on to panels make it feel more like a work of art than mere wallpaper. Launched recently in Milan, it costs €1,260 per 915mm panel. Degournay.com

3. Rockface is a hand-dyed lacquered paper from luxe brand Fromental. The washes of colour in El Capitan, the colourway pictured evoke the scholars rocks, fantastically-shaped stones that have inspired China’s poets and painters for millennia. They were brought from the far-flung corners of the dynasty to be used in studios to help artists evoke a natural mood. This print costs about €570 per square metre. Fromental.co.uk

4. Palmetto is a collection launched by Harlequin last September. This colourway, Cranes in Flight, features stylised images of a crane, who is, mythologically, considered to be a bird of Apollo, the sun god that heralded spring. A symbol of happiness and eternal you in Japanese, Chinese and Korean culture cranes stand for good fortune. This design costs €82 per roll from Brian S Nolan in Dún Laoghaire. Briansnolan.ie

5. Wallpaper isn’t something you see used much in modern kitchens. But this fresh take by New York decorators Morris and Woodhouse Interiors using a classic Bangles design by American paper house Phillip Jeffries really brings the pure white design to life making what could be perceived to be a sterile space very much into the heart of the home. 6. Eley Kishimoto is a British print company run by husband and wife team Welshman Mark Eley and Japanese Wakako Mishimoto whose prints have graced the world catwalks on clothing and accessories or superbrands like Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs and Alexander McQueen. The label is considered the patron saint of print and expanded from fashion to everything from Vans slip-on footwear to its first book of wallpaper. 7. Wallpaper can be used decoratively in myriad ways. Kricken and James Yaker run Oregon-based design and build firm Vanillawood. In this home on Summit Drive they painted the stair treads adding an eye-catching flourish by wallpapering the risers with Woods, a print available in four different colourways and one of 37 eye-catching designs you can buy from the firm’s new ecommerce site.
