Made of copper, the Pajak is a workhorse radiator that in the right setting could double as a clothes horse. Its industrial design means it can be decorative as well as practical with its patina changing over time depending on how shiny or dull you’d prefer it to look. Wooden knobs mean it can moonlight as coat rack, which is ideal in a hall when you come in from a wet January evening. The radiator will dry your coat as well as heat the space. This style, which comes in water and dual-fuel versions, is available in nine sizes. There are numerous Victorian-style radiators on the market. UK-based Feature Radiators does some of the best. Its Etonian, which comes in seven different sizes and muted metallic finishes, has been used in numerous National Trust and Grand Designs properties. Forge is a long-legged, bare metal lacquered heater that works in warehouse and industrial interiors. Prices respectively start from €352 and €307, ex delivery. If you don’t like the look of the radiators but can’t afford to upgrade them, you can completely transform the look and feel of a space with bespoke radiator covers. They are ideal in a hallway and can double as a place to put a lamp in lieu of a console table, says Denise O’Connor of Optimise Design, who did this hallway in Kinnegad. You can also make them super-functional by incorporating some drawers into the top. Using the same streamlined cabinets throughout your home can knit the whole space together. Italian radiator brand Scirocco believes in using strong colours and textures in its fabrications to redraw heat and turn the business of heat into a fashion statement. The Design Collection Graffe is a paper-clip shaped rad that doubles as a towel warmer; Brick resembles the bases used to build Lego homes with and will thrill small children while the appropriately named Winter, pictured, is a range of bars that can be ordered in a matte meadow green, intense dark blue, dark brown, black or a bone white. It’s such a simple idea that you do wonder why someone didn’t think of it before now but Italian designed Caleido radiators include smart shelving. For bathroom use, two ranges stand out: Rebel, where single horizontal styles start from about €1,936, and Rude, pictured, from about €2,820, ex-delivery. Warm metallic are everywhere and this Cortina nails the trend in a way that adds a fancy embellishment to one of a home’s most functional pieces of kit.
