Best in Class: High-end dining

This throws out the rulebook on low-key looking Nordic design. Brightly coloured Grand Prix chairs designed by Danish architect Arne Jacobsen in 1957 surround a circular table in an opulent period setting. The chair, from €395 at Dún Laoghaire-based Lost Weekend, was first shown at the spring exhibition of Danish arts and crafts at the Danish Museum of Art & Design in Copenhagen and was renamed after it won the Grand Prix at the Triennale di Milano in the same year. This UFO dining table, from €6,520, is a sculptural piece that is out of this world and will seat two or 10 equally comfortably. Made by Italian design house Emmemobili it is shown here with the Sign dining chair, a leather-covered cantilevered design that starts from €2,169. Inspired by astronomy, the Copernico light fixture overhead simulates orbits around the opalescent bulbs. This plush look, called the “Vicarage”, is by UK interiors company Uber. Its mauve walls which soften the light in the room – especially after dark – and deeply-cushioned dining chairs, backed in richly textured royal purple chenille, mean guests will happily stay in situ for hours. The dark polished wood-topped table and brass art deco pedestals draw the eye in while the smoked and antiqued mirror feature wall is designed to draw diners’ attention and flatter them when they catch their own reflection in it. This soothing room, designed by US based Liz Williams Interiors has a café au lait paintscape with the ceilings, woodwork and wainscotting painted in a rich contrasting cream. The chandelier is by American designer David Iatesta. The antique sconces that frame the painting were found at Parc Monceau Antiques in Atlanta and the creamware plates set as a trio below each light were found at Interiors Market in Atlanta. Savannah-based Linn Gresham of Haute Décor created a deep south feel to this Georgian-inspired estate designed by architect John L Deering. The traditional design lets the dining room’s period-inspired features do all the talking. The custom-made mahogany shield-back chairs and carvers are upholstered in a line check by Brunschwig & Fils. The walls are painted in a Benjamin Moore colour, Grant Beige, available at MRCB Paints, while the chandelier is by US firm, Circa Lighting. Hautedecor.net; circalighting.com. This house at Wimbledon Hill Park in London has two dining rooms, a formal one and this eating area, a beautifully-symmetrical open-plan space designed by London-based CID Interieur that has the kitchen at its heart. The double-height space has been used to add dramatic matching lighting over the dining table and the living area. Designed by Nick Mailer Lighting, a third piece on the wall above the kitchen acts like a back-lit sculpture. These broad striped seats have a button detail to the rear to add interest. The space feels serene thanks to the simple off-white floor-length curtains framing the timber sash windows. A Chinese patterned blue and white wallpaper adds another layer of personality and contrasts strongly with the simple classic shape of the dining table.
