Architect Pamela Sandler worked with interior designer Elena Letteron of Germain Interiors to create this fairytale arrangement in a lakeside summer home. The beds stand taller than bunk beds you might buy from a furniture shop and were designed to take advantage of the extra ceiling height, so that climbing to the top bunk feels like a real retreat. This is a fresh take on the nautical theme for a Jersey shore bungalow. Designed by New York-based interiors firm Chango & Co it features a shipshape configuration of two bunks, accessed by a rope ladder that wouldn’t look out of place on a sailing vessel and it is secured with maritime-grade steel railings. A third built-in bed sits at right angles so all three occupants can see each other. The only navy in the room is a trim on the wide red and white striped bed linen. The owners of this weekend house wanted their kids to experience “country” living and to be able to share this experience with friends, hence the bunkroom idea, explains builder Jonathan Caron. “Ceiling height was a consideration. The owner wanted to allow enough space for each bunker to be able to sit up without hitting their head.” Privacy curtains, individual reading lights and ladders strong enough for an adult to use were other factors. jonathancaron.com

Built-in bunk beds are a big trend in country houses and weekend retreats, says James Dixon of JDArchitect, who has offices in New York and Portland, Oregon. “It’s a way to pack in lots of extra accommodation into one room. Families with kids especially love the set-up. But when you throw all the adults together it can become quite the party.” The mattresses on the upper beds sit on a secondary raised platform so that the base is not visible to those underneath.
