CO GALWAY: €1.1M:A LARGE Georgian-style house in the heart of east Galway's hunting country on around 30 acres of fields near Athenry is for sale for €1.1 million.
The owners of Raford House, a Georgian mansion on 33 acres built in the 1750s at Kiltullagh, Athenry, sold it in 2004.
They then built Raford Park, a 381sq m (4,101sq ft) five-bedroom house in the style of the original Raford, but with modern comforts like underfloor heating and central vacuuming.
They are now selling this house and 30 acres of agricultural land through agent Sherry FitzGerald Pat Callanan.
A long driveway leads to the entrance hall, which sets the stage for what aims to be a replica of the original: a large Waterford crystal chandelier hangs over a black and white tiled marble floor, and there is a large polished black marble fireplace.
There is a white marble fireplace in the drawingroom, which has a bay window overlooking the fields – and a surround sound system.
Even the modern kitchen/diningroom is furnished in period style. It has a polished mahogany floor, an Aga, another crystal chandelier, and granite topped island and worktops.
Ground floor accommodation also includes a library with an office off it and a conservatory opening onto landscaped gardens.
There are five bedrooms upstairs, with a walk-in wardrobe off the main en suite bedroom.
An unusual feature is a roof garden big enough to be another reception room outside.
Raford is in the heart of Galway Blazers hunting country (it features a lot in Irish Field reports) and, according to the agent, there’s also good trout fishing on the Raford river which flows through the grounds.
It is also good shooting country, with plenty of pheasant, duck and snipe.
