A watercolour by Jack B Yeats, titled The Young One and estimated at €20,000-€30,000, makes its auction debut in Morgan O'Driscoll's Irish Art sale at the RDS, Minerva Suite, Ballsbridge on Monday at 6pm.
The painting, dated 1891, depicts market day in O’Connell Street, Sligo where a farmer is being shown a frisky horse by a dealer. A catalogue note by Yeats expert Dr Róisín Kennedy says “the large dynamic body of the horse, with its flowing mane and tail, contrasts with the static figures of the two men and it almost appears to be running out into the viewer’s space” while “the composition is completed by the delightful vignette of the young boy marching into town on his obedient donkey, another familiar motif in Yeats’s work”.
The auction features 135 paintings to suit a wide range of tastes and budget, by artists including Paul Henry, Walter Osborne and Graham Knuttel. Notable among the more affordable lots is an oil-on-canvas titled
Maeve Binchy's House, Dalkey
by Gerard Byrne (€2,500-€3,500).
